Introduction

Climate is a crucial component of the environment that significantly affects the success of plant cultivation. Extreme climate conditions can have a negative impact on plant growth and quality, especially for annual crops such as food crops. One of the most significant climate indicators is rainfall, which plays a vital role in determining the optimal planting season to meet national food needs. This study focuses on the prediction of rainfall in Simalungun Regency, using the Arima Box-Jenkins method, which is one of the effective quantitative forecasting techniques.

Methodology

The data used in this study included a period from July 2012 to June 2017. The analysis was conducted using the Arima Box-Jenkins method, which is a very popular forecasting technique in time series analysis. The Arima model (2,0,2) was selected as the most appropriate model for forecasting rainfall in Simalungun Regency, based on the smallest value of several forecasting errors, namely MSE (Mean Square Error) which reaches 0.0334, RMSE (root Mean Square Error) of 0.0011, and Mape (Mean Absolute Percentage Error) of -0.0080.

Analysis of the Arima Box-Jenkins Method

The Arima method (Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average) is a very popular forecasting technique in time series analysis, mainly because of its ability to capture the patterns in historical data. In its application, this Arima model goes through three important stages: identification, estimation, and diagnosis.

Model Identification

At this stage, researchers analyze data to determine the right parameters for the Arima model. In this study, the determination of parameters (P, D, Q) was carried out by considering the autocorrelation pattern contained in the data.

Estimated Parameters

After the model is identified, the parameter of the model is estimated using the maximum likelihood or the smallest square method. This estimate aims to get the most appropriate model based on existing data.

Model Diagnosis

In the last stage, it is important to evaluate the model that has been made by checking the residual (residual) to ensure that the model has met the basic assumptions of the Arima model. Residuals that do not show certain patterns or structures indicate that the model is good.

The Importance of Rainfall Predictions

Accurate rainfall predictions have many benefits, especially for the agricultural sector. By knowing the estimated rainfall in the future, farmers can plan for planting and harvesting more effectively, thereby reducing the risk of failure of results. Conclusion

The success of the rainfall forecasting model in Simalungun Regency shows that appropriate statistical analysis can provide valuable insight for decision-making in the agricultural sector. Although this model applies as long as there are no fundamental changes in data patterns, the use of the Arima Box-Jenkins method still shows valid and reliable results in helping to increase food security. Thus, this research not only contributes to science in the field of meteorology and agriculture but also helps in sustainable development efforts through better planning.
