Ramadan fasting, as one of the pillars of Islam, is a 30-day period of fasting observed by Muslims around the world. In Indonesia, Ramadan fasting lasts for 13-14 hours a day, during which Muslims are prohibited from consuming food and drink, smoking, having sex, and are recommended to hold back emotions.

Research has shown that fasting or Intermittent Fasting (IF) can reduce inflammation and oxidative stress through autofagi activation. IF can reduce insulin levels and fasting blood sugar, while increasing the concentration of growth hormones and insulin sensitivity. This has a positive impact on the cardiovascular system by lowering blood pressure, cholesterol, LDL, and triglycerides. In addition, IF is also associated with weight loss and abdominal fat, which ultimately improves metabolic markers significantly. However, the influence of Ramadan fasting (RIF) on oxidative stress is still not completely revealed, and there are differences in research results about this effect.

Research data were analyzed using the SPSS program, with a significance level of P <0.05.

The results showed a significant decrease in MDA levels before and after Ramadan fasting (p <0.001). The median of MDA levels before Ramadan fasting was 4.88 nmol/ml (1.68-101.5 nmol/ml), whereas after Ramadan fasting, the median level of MDA dropped to 3.96 nmol/ml (0.97-92.20 nmol/ml).

Conclusion

This study shows that Ramadan fasting can reduce oxidative stress parameters, namely MalondialDehyda (MDA) levels, in obesity patients. These findings indicate the potential benefits of Ramadan fasting for health, especially in reducing oxidative stress associated with obesity. However, further research needs to be done to understand the mechanism of Ramadan fasting in reducing oxidative stress and potential benefits for overall health.
