This study aims to evaluate the degree of dental erosion, the value of the tooth sensitivity threshold associated with the degree of erosion, as well as the relationship between the two variables in swimmers in the swimming pool of Medan.

Methodology

This study was conducted with an observational analytic approach using cross-sectional design. A total of 34 swimmers became samples of this research. Data collection was carried out through a questionnaire and examination of six labial surface anterior teeth using the classification of the cate tooth erosion index. Measurement of dental sensitivity is done with an electric pulp tester.

Results

The results showed that all swimmers (100%) experienced tooth erosion on the labial surface of the anterior tooth permanent with the degree of etching (ET) and teeth 1 (G1). The average tooth sensitivity threshold value for etching degrees is 15.33 ± 7,089, while for the degree of G1 is 10.80 ± 3,416. Through the T-Independent test, a significant difference is found to the tooth sensitivity threshold based on the degree of tooth erosion in the swimmer. Further analysis using the Spearman correlation test shows a significant correlation between the value of the tooth sensitivity threshold with the degree of erosion.

In other words, the higher the degree of tooth erosion, the higher the sensitivity that is felt.
