The Relationship between Glomerular Filtration Rate and Mortality in Burns Patients at Adam Malik Hajj Hospital Medan

Introduction

Burns are a type of injury that can cause significant damage to the body, and in severe cases, can lead to death. According to data from RSCM and RS Dr. Soetomo, the mortality rate of burns patients in Indonesia reached 27.6% and 26.41% in 2012. One of the serious complications that can occur due to burns is acute kidney failure, which is marked by a decrease in the glomerular filtration rate (LFG). This study aims to analyze the relationship between LFG and the mortality rate in burns patients at Adam Malik Haji Hospital Medan.

Background

Burns are tissue damage caused by contact with heat sources. One of the most common types of burns is caused by fire. The severity of burns can vary depending on the extent and depth of the burn, as well as the age and overall health of the patient. In severe cases, burns can lead to complications such as infection, shock, and metabolic disorders, which can increase the risk of mortality.

The Importance of Glomerular Filtration Rate (LFG)

LFG is a measure of the kidney's ability to filter waste products from the blood. A decrease in LFG can indicate kidney damage or failure, which can be a serious complication in burns patients. In this study, we aim to analyze the relationship between LFG and the mortality rate in burns patients at Adam Malik Haji Hospital Medan.

Research Methods

This research is an analysis using secondary data from medical records. Data was collected at the Adam Malik Haji Hospital Medan from April to June 2016, with a population consisting of all burns patients treated at the hospital between January and December 2015. The total samples taken amounted to 47 people. Inclusion criteria are burns patients who are hospitalized during the specified period, while exclusion criteria include incomplete medical records.

Research Results

Of the 47 research subjects, 11 subjects were recorded due to burns. The average age of the patient is 28.64 years (± 19.33 years), with the majority of male patients as many as 29 people (61.7%). The average burn area experienced by patients is 34.06% (± 18.2). The results of statistical analysis show that there is no significant difference between the sex and type of burns to the mortality rate, thus qualifying for the mapping.

Furthermore, bivariate analysis shows that LFG has no statistically significant relationship to death in burns patients, with a value of p = 0.585 (p <0.05). This shows that the LFG has no significant effect on the level of mortality in the burn patients under study.

This study provides an important insight into the factors that influence death in burns patients. Although LFG is often used as an indicator of kidney health, results that indicate the absence of significant relationships with mortality may be influenced by several other factors, such as the area of burns, age, and other complications.

Extensive and deep burns can affect the function of other organs, which lead to death, although the measured kidney function through LFG remains in the normal range. Therefore, it is important to consider the overall clinical picture when analyzing the risk of mortality in burns patients.

Conclusion

In conclusion, this study found that there is no significant relationship between LFG and mortality in burns patients at Adam Malik Haji Hospital Medan. However, other factors such as the area of burns, age, and other complications may play a role in the death of burn patients. Further research is needed to explore more in the factors that may play a role in the death of burns patients, in order to increase the results of future care.

Recommendations

Based on the findings of this study, we recommend that medical personnel consider the overall clinical picture when analyzing the risk of mortality in burns patients. This includes considering the area of burns, age, and other complications that may affect the patient's outcome. Additionally, further research is needed to explore more in the factors that may play a role in the death of burns patients, in order to increase the results of future care.
