The Influence of Entrepreneurship and Social Media on Entrepreneurial Interest in the Management of the Faculty of Economics and Business, University of North Sumatra, Class of 2012

Introduction

In today's digital age, entrepreneurship has become a crucial aspect of economic growth and development. The University of North Sumatra (USU) has been at the forefront of promoting entrepreneurship among its students, particularly in the Faculty of Economics and Business. A study conducted in 2012 revealed the significant influence of the spirit of entrepreneurship and social media on the interest of management students. This article aims to explore the findings of this study and provide recommendations for maximizing the potential of entrepreneurial spirit and social media in encouraging student entrepreneurship interest.

The Spirit of Entrepreneurship and Social Media: Catalysts for Entrepreneurial Interest

The study involved 73 respondents chosen through purposive random sampling and used descriptive analysis and multiple linear regression to reveal the relationship between the variables of entrepreneurial spirit, social media, and entrepreneurial interest. The results showed that the two variables, entrepreneurial spirit and social media, together have a positive and significant influence on the interest of student entrepreneurship. This is indicated by the Adjusted R Square (R2) value of 0.565, which means 56.5% of entrepreneurial interest can be explained by the Variable Entrepreneurship and Social Media Variables. The rest, 43.5%, is influenced by other variables that are not examined in this study.

Entrepreneurial spirit is a characteristic that someone has encouraged him to take risks, innovative, creative, and has a strong determination to build his own business. Students with strong entrepreneurial spirit tend to be encouraged to pursue business opportunities and build a career as an entrepreneur. This is because entrepreneurial spirit is a key driver of innovation and creativity, which are essential for building a successful business.

The Importance of Social Media in Encouraging Entrepreneurial Interest

Social media plays an important role in providing information, inspiration, and access to various business opportunities. Platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube are a place for entrepreneurs to share ideas, experiences, and strategies to build a business. In addition, social media also makes it easy for students to network with other entrepreneurs, investors, and mentors, who can provide support and guidance.

The Role of Social Media in Encouraging Entrepreneurial Interest

Social media becomes an important catalyst in building entrepreneurship interest among students. Here are some important roles:

Inspiration: Social media is filled with inspirational stories from young entrepreneurs who have succeeded in building their own business. These stories are motivated for students to dare to pursue their dreams of becoming an entrepreneur.

Information: Social media is an easily accessible source of information about various business opportunities, industrial trends, and marketing strategies. Students can learn the business strategy of experienced entrepreneurs through content shared on social media.

Network: Social media platforms become a forum for students to network with other entrepreneurs, investors, and mentors. This network can provide very valuable support and guidance for students who want to start their own business.

Recommendations to Utilize the Potential of Entrepreneurial Spirit and Social Media

Based on the results of this study, several recommendations can be given to maximize the potential of entrepreneurial and social media souls in encouraging student entrepreneurship interest:

Curriculum Improvement: The Faculty of Economics and Business can consider improving the curriculum with material that is more focused on developing entrepreneurial spirit and the use of social media in building a business.

Business Incubator Program: The formation of a business incubator program that is integrated with social media can help students in developing business ideas, get mentorship, and build connections with investors.

Digital Campaign Development: The use of effective digital campaigns through social media can help inspire and motivate students to pursue dreams of becoming an entrepreneur.

Conclusion

This study shows that the spirit of entrepreneurship and social media is an important factor that can encourage entrepreneurial interest among students. By utilizing the potential of these two factors, it is hoped that more young entrepreneurs can be created to contribute to Indonesia's economic growth. The Faculty of Economics and Business, University of North Sumatra, can play a crucial role in promoting entrepreneurship among its students by implementing the recommendations provided in this study.
