A Description of Eating Patterns and Habits of Consumption of Breastfeeding Herbal Medicine and Smooth Breastfeeding of the Medan Tuntung Region in 2018

Introduction

Breast milk is the best food for babies until the age of 23 months. Unfortunately, there are still many nursing mothers who face obstacles in giving breastfeeding. One effort to increase production and smoothness of breastfeeding is to regulate eating patterns and consuming herbal medicine. This study aims to reveal eating patterns and habits of herbal medicine in nursing mothers in Medan Tuntung District, as well as their relationship with the smoothness of breastfeeding.

Methodology

This research is descriptive with a cross-sectional design. As many as 91 nursing mothers who consume herbal medicine into research samples. Data was collected through interviews using a questionnaire. The results showed that:

Breastfeeding Mother Diet

Good Categorized Diet: 81.3% of breastfeeding mothers have a good categorized diet. The types of food consumed are quite diverse (93.4%), with good energy and protein adequacy levels (84.6% and 83.5%). The main carbohydrate source is rice, while the source of protein comes from fish, eggs, tofu, and tempeh. The most consumed vegetables are cassava leaves, mustard greens, and kale. Fruits that are a source of favorite vitamins are papaya, guava, and oranges. Unfortunately, the most consumed snacks are fried foods.

Regular Consumption: As many as 76.9% of breastfeeding mothers consume herbal medicine regularly, with consumption frequency 1 time per day (84.6%).

The Smoothness of Breastfeeding

Smooth Breastfeeding: Most (93.4%) nursing mothers can give breast milk smoothly to their babies.

Further Analysis

The results of this study indicate that most of the nursing mothers in Medan Tuntung have a good diet and routinely consume herbal medicine. This shows a high awareness of the importance of nutrition to support the smoothness of breastfeeding. However, it should be observed that fried food consumption as a distraction is still a trend among nursing mothers. Fried foods contain high saturated fats that can increase the risk of obesity and chronic diseases. It is essential to educate breastfeeding mothers to eat healthier distractions, such as fruits, nuts, or yogurt.

In addition, although most of the nursing mothers smoothly provide breastfeeding, it is necessary to explore further the factors that cause a small portion of nursing mothers to experience obstacles in breastfeeding. There may be other factors that influence, such as lack of knowledge about proper breastfeeding techniques, stress, or health conditions for breastfeeding mothers.

This study provides some important suggestions to improve the quality of breastfeeding in the Medan Tuntung region:

By increasing knowledge and support for nursing mothers, it is hoped that the quality of breastfeeding in the Medan Tuntung region can increase and support the optimal growth and development of the next generation.

Conclusion

This study aims to reveal eating patterns and habits of herbal medicine in nursing mothers in Medan Tuntung District, as well as their relationship with the smoothness of breastfeeding. The results show that most of the nursing mothers in Medan Tuntung have a good diet and routinely consume herbal medicine. However, it is essential to educate breastfeeding mothers to eat healthier distractions and explore further the factors that cause a small portion of nursing mothers to experience obstacles in breastfeeding. By increasing knowledge and support for nursing mothers, it is hoped that the quality of breastfeeding in the Medan Tuntung region can increase and support the optimal growth and development of the next generation.

Based on the results of this study, it is recommended that:

By implementing these recommendations, it is hoped that the quality of breastfeeding in the Medan Tuntung region can increase and support the optimal growth and development of the next generation.
