Skin disease is one of the biggest challenges in the global health context. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), skin diseases affect millions of people worldwide, causing significant morbidity and mortality. Although the handling of skin diseases in inpatient units is rare, treatment through hospitals has a significant role. In addition, patients can also develop skin diseases while undergoing treatment in the ward. However, research on skin disease patterns in the inpatient ward is still classified as rare. This article aims to describe the pattern of skin diseases found in the inpatient ward of the Adam Malik Hospital in Medan during 2016.

This research is a retrospective descriptive study that uses the total sampling method. The total sampling method is a type of sampling technique where the entire population is used as the sample. Data is taken from the patient's medical record with a diagnosis of skin diseases, both as the main diagnosis and comorum, at the Adam Malik Hajj Hospital Medan during 2016. The use of medical records as a data source provides a reliable and accurate representation of the skin disease patterns in the inpatient ward. Data analysis was carried out using Statistical Product and Service Solutions (SPSS) software version 24.

Of the 204 samples studied, 104 patients (51%) were male and 100 patients (49%) were women. The gender distribution of the patients is relatively balanced, indicating that skin diseases affect both men and women equally. The adult age group (20-59 years) became the most group, reaching 58.8%. The adult age group is the most affected by skin diseases, indicating that skin diseases are a significant health concern in this age group. Based on the type of diagnosis, 158 patients (77.5%) have skin diseases as a diagnosis of a accompanying diagnosis, while 46 patients (22.5%) have skin diseases as the main diagnosis.

Further analysis shows that the average interval between the treatment time of the hospital and the emergence of skin diseases as a diagnosis of the accompanying is 16 days. Meanwhile, the average length of treatment for skin diseases which is the main diagnosis is 14 days. This shows that although skin diseases are rarely a major reason for being treated, good care is very important to avoid further complications.

Based on this study, it can be concluded that the decubitus ulcer, as well as furunkel and carbunkel, are the most common skin diseases found in the inpatient ward of Adam Malik Hospital in Medan in 2016. These findings highlight the need for greater attention to the prevention and management of skin diseases, especially for patients who are hospitalized.
