Introduction

The Instagram Medantalk account, in particular, has gained significant attention among students, with many using it as a means of accessing relevant and timely information related to their studies. This article aims to explore the motive behind the use of the Instagram Medantalk account in meeting the information needs of students.

Theory and Research Methods

The theory that underlies this research is the uses and gratifications theory, which examines users' reasons and motivation in utilizing the media. This theory is particularly relevant in understanding the use of social media among students, as it highlights the importance of understanding the motivations and needs of users in utilizing social media platforms. The method used in this research is correlational research, which aims to find a relationship between two variables, namely the use of the Instagram Medantalk account (variable X) and meeting information needs (variable Y).

The population that is the object of this research is a 2016-2018 class of USU FISIP Communication Study Program. In collecting data, researchers used a questionnaire distributed to 78 respondents. The sampling technique used includes proportional stratified random sampling, purposive sampling, and accidental sampling, which ensures representatives of respondents who participated in research.

Data Analysis Techniques

To analyze the collected data, several methods are used, such as a single table analysis, cross table analysis, and correlation test using the Spearman Rank-Order formula through the SPSS 22 application. After that, the data obtained is processed using the Guildford scale to determine the significance of the results.

Research Result

The results showed that the hypothesis received was Ha, which means there was a significant influence between the use of the Instagram Medantalk account and the fulfillment of student information needs. Hypothesis test shows a high and strong correlation between variable X and variable Y, which shows that the use of social media can contribute positively to the delivery of information needed by students.

Additional Analysis and Explanation

Further analysis shows that students use the Medantalk Instagram account not only as a means of entertainment, but also as a tool to get the latest and relevant information related to their study. Social media is a fast and effective alternative in meeting information needs in the current digital era. Students prefer platforms that can be accessed easily and have content that is beneficial for their education.

The significant influence of the use of the Medantalk Instagram account also reflects that students are more likely to participate in discussions, sharing information, and interact with content related to their studies. This shows that social media, if used wisely, can be a valuable source of information and support the student learning process.
