Introduction

In today's globalized world, cultural translation has become increasingly relevant. The ability to translate cultural terms accurately and effectively is crucial in bridging the gap between different cultures. This research aims to examine the strategies used in translating Indonesian special cultural terms into English, with a focus on the magazine "Colors" published by Garuda Indonesia. The study aims to identify the specific cultural terms, specify the translation strategy applied, and explain the reasons behind the translation of some of these terms.

Methodology

The methodology used in this study is a qualitative descriptive design. Data sources come from five articles in The Archipelago Journal of Colors in June, September, October, November, and December 2017. All articles were written by Indonesian writers and have been translated into English. The data collected in the form of special terms of Indonesian culture, both in the form of words and phrases. The data analysis process is carried out through several stages, including classification, analysis, discussion, and reporting.

Results

The results showed that there were 70 terms of Indonesian culture that were successfully identified in Colors magazine. The term is divided into several categories:

Ecology (25%): This category includes terms related to the natural environment, such as plants, animals, and ecosystems.
Material Culture (39%): This category includes terms related to physical objects, such as tools, clothing, and architecture.
Social Culture (10%): This category includes terms related to social norms, values, and practices.
Organization, Adat, Activities, and Concepts (13%): This category includes terms related to social organization, traditional practices, and cultural concepts.
Habit (4%): This category includes terms related to daily habits and routines.
Folklore (1%): This category includes terms related to traditional stories, legends, and myths.
Time (3%): This category includes terms related to time and scheduling.
Phrases (4%): This category includes terms related to idiomatic expressions and phrases.
Proverb (1%): This category includes terms related to traditional sayings and proverbs.

From the analysis conducted, the translator applies five translation strategies:

Translating with a more general word (2%): This strategy involves translating a specific cultural term with a more general word that conveys the same meaning.
Translating with cultural replacement (55%): This strategy involves replacing a specific cultural term with a similar term from the target culture.
Translating with the word loan (16%): This strategy involves borrowing a word from the source culture and incorporating it into the target culture.
Translating with the word loan accompanied by explanation (16%): This strategy involves borrowing a word from the source culture and providing an explanation or context to help the target audience understand its meaning.
Translating with removal (6%): This strategy involves omitting a specific cultural term that is considered too complex or difficult to translate.

Reasons Behind Translation

The results of the analysis also revealed two main reasons behind the translation of some of these cultural terms:

Foreignization ideology (64%): This ideology involves introducing Indonesian culture to foreign communities through translation, with the aim of promoting cultural understanding and appreciation.
Translator capabilities (36%): This factor involves the ability of translators to accurately and effectively translate cultural terms, which is influenced by their knowledge of both cultures.

The translation process is not without challenges. The ability of translators is a key factor in determining the quality of translation. Translators who have a deep understanding of both cultures - cultural origin and target culture - will be more able to produce accurate and relevant translations.
