Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is a virus that attacks white blood cells, resulting in a decrease in the function of the immune system. Globally, the HIV epidemic remains a significant public health concern. According to data from UNAIDS in 2019, there are 37.9 million people living with HIV worldwide. Of these figures, 160,000 are children under the age of 15 years, while in adults, the number reaches 1.7 million. In Indonesia, the highest HIV prevalence was found in key population groups, such as injecting drug users (28.8%), sex men with men (LSL) (25.8%), transgender (24.8%), and sex workers (5.3%).

The Importance of Understanding Sociodemographic and Behavioral Factors

This study aims to analyze the relationship between sociodemographic factors and behavior and HIV events in individuals visiting the VCT clinic in Medan's Example Puskesmas in 2020. Understanding the sociodemographic and behavioral factors that contribute to HIV events is crucial in developing effective prevention and intervention strategies. By identifying the factors that increase the risk of HIV transmission, healthcare providers and policymakers can develop targeted interventions to reduce the spread of the virus.

Methodology

Data collection was carried out by interview using a questionnaire, then analyzed univariate and bivariate using the Chi-Square statistical test and simple logistics regression with a significance level of 0.05. The study used a quantitative approach to analyze the relationship between sociodemographic factors and behavior and HIV events. The questionnaire used in the study was designed to collect data on sociodemographic factors, such as age, education level, sex, marital status, knowledge of HIV, attitude towards HIV, and precautions taken.

Results

The results showed a significant relationship between several sociodemographic factors and behavior with HIV events. These factors include age (p = 0.030), education level (p = 0.000), sex (p = 0.044), marital status (p = 0.000), knowledge of HIV (p = 0.000), attitude towards HIV (P = 0.000), and the precautions taken (p = 0.000). These findings indicate that better age and education can be related to the level of awareness and higher knowledge about HIV, which in turn contributes to the reduction in the risk of transmission.

Implications of the Study

The findings of this study have several implications for HIV prevention and intervention strategies. Public understanding of HIV/AIDS is very important to break the chain of the spread of the virus. Therefore, there needs to be an increase in socialization programs from the government and the Medan City Health Office which targets the dissemination of information about HIV/AIDS, especially among the younger generation. Effective counseling can provide better knowledge and change community attitudes and behavior towards HIV/AIDS, so as to reduce existing stigma and increase prevention efforts.

The Role of Education and Health Sectors

In this context, the involvement of various sectors, including education, health, and community organizations, is very necessary to create greater collective awareness. By educating the community, especially young people, about the risk and prevention of HIV, it is hoped that there will be a reduction in HIV events in the long run. This effort is not only important for individuals but also for overall public health, thus creating a safer and healthier environment.
