The Growth of Sugar Cane Seeds (Saccharum officinarum L.) from the Upper Stem in Various Nursery Methods and the Age of the Planting Material

Introduction

The growth of sugar cane seeds is a crucial aspect of sugarcane cultivation, and various factors can influence its success. One alternative that can increase the production of sugar cane seeds is to use the Single Bud Planting nursery method, which consists of Bud Chips and Bud Set. The quality of good planting material and appropriate age is an important factor that affects success in sugar cane nurseries. This study aims to explore the growth of sugar cane seeds originating from the upper stem using various nursery methods and different age of planting materials.

Research Background

This research was conducted in the research land of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of North Sumatra, Medan, at an altitude of ± 32 meters above sea level, between December 2021 and March 2022. The research design used a random design group (RAK) with two treatment factors and four replications. The first factor is the nursery method, which consists of two types namely Bud Chips and Bud Set. The second factor is the age of the planting material, which is divided into three levels, namely 6 months, 7 months, and 8 months.

The selection of nursery methods is very crucial in sugarcane cultivation. The nursery method can affect the growth and development of sugar cane seedlings, and it is essential to choose the right method to increase the production of sugar cane seeds. The results showed that the Bud Set method provides a percentage of growing shoots, plant height, and stem diameter which is better than the Bud Chips method. In addition, the use of 7-month planting ages is also proven to produce optimal growth of sugar cane seedlings. However, this study found no interaction between the nursery method and the age of the planting material in increasing the growth of sugar cane seeds.
