The Study of Phosphate Nutrients at Different Soil Depths Due to the Fertilization of P Clon Eucalyptus in Andisol (Case Study at the HPHTI PT Toba Pulp Lestari Habinsaran Sector)

Introduction

Phosphate nutrients play a crucial role in the growth and development of Eucalyptus clones. The availability of phosphate nutrients in the soil can significantly impact the health and productivity of these trees. In this study, we aim to evaluate the phosphate (P) nutrient content in two soil depths under the Eucalyptus stand in the HPHTI Habinsaran sector of PT Toba Pulp Lestari. Our research focuses on understanding the effects of phosphate fertilization on the availability of P in the soil, as well as the impact of soil pH and organic matter on nutrient availability.

Methodology

Our study was conducted in November 2009 in the HPHTI Habinsaran sector of PT Toba Pulp Lestari. We used a survey method to collect soil samples from the field at two different depths: the upper layer (0-20 cm) and the lower layer (20-40 cm) in Andisol soil that has received P fertilization treatment. The fertilization treatment used consisted of three different levels of P fertilization: without fertilization, fertilizing P (56 g TSP/tree and 267 g of phosphate/tree rock), and fertilizing 2.5 P (140 g TSP/trees and 667.5 g of phosphate/trees) under the Eucalyptus clone stand.

Measurements and Analysis

We measured several parameters, including the availability of P, total P, soil pH, and C-organic levels. Quantitative data obtained was then analyzed descriptively. Our results showed that the value of availability of P at the depth of the upper and lower soil was classified very low. Meanwhile, the total value of P at the depth of the upper soil is classified as low, while at the depth of the lower soil it is categorized as very low. The pH value of the soil at the depth of the upper soil is classified as acidic, whereas at the depth of the lower soil it is classified as slightly acidic. C-organic content at the depth of the upper soil is categorized as very high, while at the depth of the lower soil is included in the low category.

Additional Analysis and Explanation

Our study provides important insights related to nutrient management in Eucalyptus cultivation, especially in land that has Andisol characteristics. The results showing the value of very low phosphate availability in both soil depths showed that the fertilization carried out was not enough to increase the ideal P availability for Eucalyptus growth. This can contribute to the need for more effective fertilization strategies, including the use of different types of fertilizers or repetition of fertilizer application at more appropriate intervals.

Furthermore, measured soil pH is also an important factor. Acidic pH conditions can inhibit the process of nutritional availability, including phosphate. In this context, fertilizing applications that guarantee that changing soil pH to be more neutral can increase agricultural output. Strategies such as the addition of lime (CaCO3) can be used to increase pH and help increase the availability of P.

Finally, the results of the measurement of high C-organic levels in the upper soil indicate a good soil health, which is important to maintain soil biodiversity and fertility. This shows that although there is a shortage of matches of some mineral nutrients, organic balance in the soil is very important for a sustainable agricultural system.

Conclusion

Deeper understanding of the interaction between fertilization, nutrient content, and soil characteristics is very important to optimize the growth of Eucalyptus clones and support sustainable agricultural practices.
