Optimization of the Use of Palm Kernel Meal as a Native Chicken Feed (Sensi Agrinak) with the Fermentation Method

Introduction

The use of palm kernel meal as a native chicken feed has been a topic of interest in recent years, particularly in the context of sustainable agriculture and animal husbandry. Palm kernel meal is a by-product of palm oil production and is rich in nutrients, making it an attractive alternative to traditional chicken feed. However, its nutritional content can be variable, and its use as a feed can be limited by its high fiber and low protein content. In this study, we aimed to optimize the use of palm kernel meal as a native chicken feed using the fermentation method.

Phase I: Fermentation of Palm Kernel Meal

In the first stage of this study, we evaluated the effect of fermentation on the nutritional content of palm kernel meal. We used the orthogonal contrast test method with several varied treatments, both from the dose of Aspergillus niger used and the length of fermentation. The treatment included control without fermentation and various combinations of Aspergillus niger doses in a span of three to nine days. Our results showed a significant increase in nutritional quality, including an increase in ash levels by 13.07%, crude protein 16.04%, and Gross Energy 12.03%. Meanwhile, crude fiber and crude fats decreased by 16.90% and 51.55% respectively. This indicates that the fermentation process can optimize the potential nutritional content of palm kernel meal.

Phase II: Biological Testing

The next stage of this study was biological testing, which aimed to measure fermented feed digestibility. At this stage, chickens were placed in an individual cage and monitoring and measurement of excreta to analyze the levels of ash, nitrogen, crude protein, and metabolic energy. Our results showed a significant increase in nutritional digestibility, such as crude protein digestibility which increased by 12.97%, and nitrogen retention that increased to 16.12%. The treatment that produces the best digestibility is on the dose of P2, namely with Aspergillus niger dose of 4 g/kg and fermentation time for 6 days. These results indicate that fermentation not only increases the nutritional content but also the effectiveness of feed in the body of the chicken.

Phase III: Performance Testing

In the third stage of this study, we focused on chicken performance testing by providing a variety of different feed treatments to determine its effect on feed consumption, daily weight gain (PBBH), and ration conversion. The study was conducted at the Animal Husbandry Cage, Faculty of Agriculture, University of North Sumatra (FP-USU), Medan, during the period August to November 2020. The feed treatment included variations in the use of palm kernel meal and fermented feed. Our results showed that the treatment of P4 (BIS 10% + BISF 30%) had the best performance, with an average feed consumption of 37.36 grams of dry ingredients per head per day and PBBH averaged 11.45 grams per head per day. Nevertheless, the treatment of P1 (BIS 40%) is more efficient in terms of cost, able to reduce feed costs by up to 13.08%.

Conclusion

From the results of this study, it can be concluded that the use of fermented palm kernel meal can improve the quality of nutritional feed for native chickens. The fermentation method is proven to be effective in increasing digestibility and chicken performance, as well as optimizing the use of existing feed resources. Thus, this research makes an important contribution to chicken farmers to improve the efficiency of feed and their livestock productivity. In addition, the use of fermented palm kernel meal can be a sustainable alternative to increase the availability of quality feed in the chicken farm industry.
