Introduction

Soil conservation is a crucial aspect of sustainable agriculture, particularly in oil palm plantations where the soil's health and fertility can significantly impact the productivity and profitability of the plantation. The use of various soil and water conservation techniques has been widely adopted in oil palm plantations to reduce soil erosion, improve soil structure, and increase water retention. However, the effectiveness of these techniques in improving the overall quality of the soil is still a topic of debate. This study aims to evaluate the characteristics of the soil using several soil and water conservation techniques in oil palm plantations and determine the most appropriate conservation techniques to reduce damage while improving the quality of the soil on oil palm plantation land.

Methodology

The study was conducted in Kebun Bangun, PTPN III, Simalungun Regency, North Sumatra Province, from April 2013 to February 2014. A non-factorial random group (rack) was used with treatment consisting of four conservation methods, namely:

Vertical Mulch (MV): This technique involves applying a layer of organic mulch on the soil surface to reduce soil erosion and improve soil moisture retention.
Biopori Compost (KB): This technique involves creating holes in the soil to allow for the infiltration of water and improve soil aeration.
Concave PC (PC): This technique involves using a concave disk to create a depression in the soil, allowing for the collection of water and reducing soil erosion.
Planting Grass (PR): This technique involves planting grass on the soil surface to improve soil structure and increase water retention.

Results

The results of the study showed that conservation techniques using vertical mulch and biopori can increase soil water content. Meanwhile, the conservation technique of planting grass and concave disk contributes to increasing soil permeability. However, interestingly, the conservation techniques applied in oil palm plantations have not had a significant effect on the content of C-organic, N-Total, C/N Ratio, Specific Weight (BD), Case Exchange Capacity (KTK), Infiltration, as well as nutrients N, P, and K on oil palm leaves.

Discussion

Analysis of the results of this study shows that the selection of appropriate conservation techniques is very influential on the sustainability and health of plantation land. Higher soil water content in the use of vertical mulch and biopori indicates that this method is effective in maintaining soil moisture, which is important in supporting the growth of oil palm plants. Maintained humidity can reduce stress in plants due to lack of water, especially in the dry season.

On the other hand, the increase in soil permeability achieved through planting grass and the use of concave disk allows water to absorb faster and reduce the risk of inundation. Inundation can cause plant roots to be submerged and reduce oxygen needed for root growth, so it is important to maintain a good soil structure.

However, the absence of a significant influence on soil chemical properties such as C-organic and N-Total shows that although the conservation techniques applied are successful in increasing some aspects of the soil physical aspects, there is a possibility that improvement in the chemical properties of the soil requires a longer time or approach different. Applying other techniques such as the application of organic fertilizer or plant rotation can be a solution to increase soil nutrient content.
