Introduction

Polyurethane is a versatile material widely used in various industrial applications, including building materials, consumer products, and more. The manufacturing process of polyurethane involves a reaction between diisocyanate and polyol. In this study, we aim to synthesize polyurethane by utilizing unsaturated fatty acids contained in hazelnut oil as a basic ingredient in making polyols. Hazelnut oil, a natural resource, is used as a source of polyol, which is then converted into polyurethane through a series of chemical reactions.

Materials and Methods

The ingredients and reagents used in this study include hazelnut oil, peracid, formic acid, hydrogen peroxide, toluene diisocyanate (TDI), glycerol, and dichloromethane solvents. The synthesis process begins with the epoxidation of unsaturated fatty acids, followed by hydrolysis (known as phhem) and alkoxilation with glycerol (known as phagem) in propanone solvents. This step aims to obtain two types of derivatives derived from hazelnut oil.

Synthesis of Polyols

The synthesis of polyols involves the reaction between hazelnut oil and peracid, followed by hydrolysis and alkoxilation with glycerol. The resulting polyols are then used to produce polyurethane through a reaction with TDI. The reaction process is carried out in reflux conditions using dichloromethane as a solvent.

Characterization of Polyurethane

The characterization of polyurethane is done by analyzing various parameters, including morphological characterization, gel content, tensile strength, and chaotic. The characterization of the functional group is also done using FT-IR spectroscopy. The results of the FT-IR spectroscopy analysis show that the product produced is polyurethane, indicated by the emergence of vibration peaks in wave numbers 3400-3300 cm-1, 1730-1710 cm-1, 1640-1600 cm-1, and 1590-1540 cm-1, which are characteristics of the ureta functional group (-NHCOO-).

Results and Discussion

The results of the study show that the polyol mixture of phhem and phagem with Peg-1000 could increase both the value of the tensile strength and the percentage of the gel content of the polyurethane formed. The highest tensile strength value (ΣT) in polyurethane was obtained from the polyol/tdi ratio of 7/3 (v/v) using the phhem method, which produced ΣT of 6.0 MPa (with childbirth, ε = 47.54% and content gel, Q = 81.77%). Meanwhile, for the phagem, ΣT obtained is 7.95 MPa (ε = 36.33%, Q = 80.63%), and with Peg-1000, ΣT reaches 9.15 MPa (ε = 28.79%, Q = 98.31%).

On the other hand, the highest gel content value is found in the use of phhem with a ratio of 5/5 (V/V), reaching 97.72% (σt = 0.35 MPa, ε = 9.57%, hard). For phagem, the 4/6 ratio produces 97.52% (σt = 0.18 MPa, ε = 9.52%, hard), while Peg-1000 with a ratio of 6/4 produces 98.68% (σt = 5.57 MPA, ε = 41.06%, Foam).

Conclusion

In conclusion, the results showed that the polyol mixture of phhem and phagem with Peg-1000 could increase both the value of the tensile strength and the percentage of the gel content of the polyurethane formed. By utilizing natural resources such as hazelnut oil, this research opens new opportunities in the development of polyurethane which is more environmentally friendly and sustainable. This is very relevant in the context of industry which is increasingly looking for alternative materials that are not only efficient but also contribute to environmental sustainability.

Future Directions

Future studies can focus on optimizing the synthesis process of polyols from hazelnut oil, as well as exploring other natural resources that can be used as a source of polyol. Additionally, the development of polyurethane with improved properties, such as thermal stability and mechanical strength, can be investigated.
