Introduction

The study of physical and chemical properties of soil in palm oil plantations is crucial for understanding the factors that affect the growth and productivity of oil palm plants. In this study, we focus on the characteristics of soil physics and chemistry in the PTP Nusantara III oil palm plantation in Tanah Raja, with a particular emphasis on the effects of different types of vegetation on soil properties. Soil physical and chemical characteristics are essential factors for palm oil growth, and understanding these factors can help improve the productivity of oil palm plants.

Background

Palm oil is one of the most widely produced and consumed oils in the world, with Indonesia being one of the largest producers. The PTP Nusantara III oil palm plantation in Tanah Raja is one of the largest oil palm plantations in Indonesia. However, the growth and productivity of oil palm plants in this plantation are affected by various factors, including soil properties. Soil texture, porosity, water content, and nutrient availability are some of the key factors that affect the growth and productivity of oil palm plants.

Methodology

This study was conducted under the guidance of Sumono and Nazif Ichwan. The study aimed to analyze the physical and chemical characteristics of soil on oil palm land with different types of vegetation, including Mucuna Bracteata, Nephrolepis Biserrata, grass, and conditions without vegetation. The parameters observed in this study include soil texture, porosity, water content in field capacity, soil permeability, total nitrogen, availability of soil phosphate, and soil potassium exchange.

Research Results

The results of this study showed that the type of soil in this location was ultisol with soil texture in the form of sand clay and pH ranging from 4.95 to 5.29, which is classified as acidic. The porosity of the soil with vegetation ranges from 50.44% to 52.21% at a depth of 5 cm and 46.86% to 46.96% at a depth of 25 cm. The water content in the field capacity also varies, which is between 32.12% to 38.98%. The measured soil permeability ranges from 4.57 to 6.01 cm/hour at a depth of 5 cm and 2.21 to 3.69 cm/hour at a depth of 25 cm.

In addition, total nitrogen in the soil with vegetation ranges from 0.11% to 0.12%, with the availability of soil phosphate between 12.87 to 18.96 ppm, and soil potassium exchanges ranges from 0.56 to 0.61 ME/ 100g. Meanwhile, for land that is not overgrown with vegetation, the measured porosity is 46.91% at a depth of 5 cm and 45% at a depth of 25 cm. The water content in the field capacity is recorded at 31.54%. The permeability of the soil without vegetation is 2.86 cm/hour at a depth of 5 cm and 1.84 cm/hour at a depth of 25 cm.

Analysis and Implications

From the results of this study, it can be concluded that the existence of vegetation has a positive effect on soil quality. Soil overgrown with vegetation shows the value of porosity, water content, and the availability of nutrients that are better than soil without vegetation. This shows the importance of vegetation in improving soil quality and supporting the growth of oil palm plants.

Based on the data obtained, proper agricultural land management by maintaining or even planting closing vegetation can be an effective strategy for improving soil health. Thus, this study provides valuable insight for agricultural practitioners and the manager of oil palm plantations to optimize the results of production by taking into account environmental factors, especially in land management.

Conclusion

With a deeper understanding of the physical and chemical nature of land, it is hoped that farmers and garden managers can make appropriate decisions in maintaining oil palm land, which not only are economically profitable but also sustainable. This study highlights the importance of vegetation in improving soil quality and supporting the growth of oil palm plants. By adopting proper agricultural land management practices, farmers and garden managers can improve the productivity of oil palm plants and contribute to sustainable agriculture.
