Simulation of Exhaust Noise Characteristics Before and After Applying Active Noise Control

Introduction

Active noise control (ANC) simulation on the exhaust is an effort made by researchers to facilitate research, save costs, and reduce the time needed before the ANC system is designed. In this study, an acoustic simulation was conducted to get the sound pressure level (SPL) and analyze the noise contours that occur around the exhaust. This study focuses on measuring noise within a distance of 1 meter from the end of the exhaust pipe on each axis (x, y, z).

Methodology

To achieve this goal, researchers use design-based software with the help of computers (CAD), namely SolidWorks 2014 to build exhaust geometry, speakers, and pipes. Furthermore, the analysis is carried out using element analysis software to (Finite Element Analysis/FEA) namely Ansys Workbench 15.0 to evaluate the physical parameters applied to the exhaust system. The parameters analyzed include the geometry dimensions, materials, grid size, boundary conditions, and the types of excitation applied to the exhaust and speaker.

The results of the simulation are then compared with measurements made experimentally. From the calculation of the percent error, it appears that the average SPL value obtained through the simulation is smaller 13.5 dB or 23.1% compared to the experimental results. The cause of this difference is caused by several parameters that are not included in the simulation, including the exhaust temperature, vibrations on the muffler, and the source of noise from the surrounding environment.
