Introduction

Obtaining maximum okra harvest requires an appropriate understanding of the ideal planting media and watering intervals. Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus L. Moench) is a popular vegetable crop that is widely cultivated in many parts of the world. However, its growth and production can be affected by various factors, including the type of planting media and watering intervals used. This study aims to determine the effect of various planting media and watering intervals on plant growth and production of okra.

Background

Okra is a heat-loving crop that requires well-draining soil and adequate water supply to support its growth and production. The ideal planting media for okra should have good aeration, drainage, and fertility to support its growth. Materials and Methods

This study was conducted on Jalan Pasar 1 Tanjung Sari, Medan Selayang District, Medan, at an altitude of ± 25 meters above sea level (DPL) during the period March to June 2021. The study tested four types of planting media, namely:

Topsoil: Basic media commonly used in plant cultivation.
Topsoil: Husk Charcoal (9: 1): Topsoil mixture and husk charcoal with a ratio of 9: 1, are expected to increase the aeration and drainage of planting media.
Topsoil: Chicken Manure (9: 1): Mixture of topsoil and chicken manure with a ratio of 9: 1, is expected to provide additional nutrients for plant growth.
Topsoil: Vermicompos (9: 1): Mixture of topsoil and vermicompos with a ratio of 9: 1, is expected to increase fertility and soil structure.

The study also compared three watering intervals, namely:

1 day: Watering is done every day.
3 days: Watering is done every three days.
Every 5 days: Watering is done every five days.

Results

The results showed that the use of planting media Topsoil: Chicken Manure (9: 1) produces growth and production of okra plants that are significantly better compared to other planting media. This shows that chicken manure is able to provide optimal nutrition for okra growth.

The results also showed that watering intervals once every day produced growth and production of okra plants that were significantly better compared to other watering intervals. This shows that okra requires sufficient water supply to support its growth and production.

Interaction of Planting Media and Watering Intervals

This study also examined the effect of interaction between planting media and watering intervals of flowering age. The results showed that the combination of planting media Topsoil: Vermicompos (9: 1) with watering intervals once a day produces the age of flowering okra the fastest. This indicates that Vermicompos is able to increase soil fertility and accelerate okra growth, which subsequently accelerates the flowering period.

Conclusion

This study shows that the use of planting media Topsoil: Chicken Manure (9: 1) and Watering Interval Once a day is the best combination of optimal growth and production of okra plants. In addition, the use of Vermicompos as a planting medium is also able to accelerate the flowering period of okra plants.

The results of this study are expected to be a reference for farmers in choosing the right planting media and watering intervals for the cultivation of okra plants, so as to increase yields and profits.

Recommendations

Based on the results of this study, the following recommendations are made:

Use of Topsoil: Chicken Manure (9: 1) as the best planting media for okra cultivation.
Watering once a day as the best watering interval for okra cultivation.
Use of Vermicompos as a planting medium to accelerate the flowering period of okra plants.

By following these recommendations, farmers can increase their yields and profits from okra cultivation.

Limitations

This study has some limitations that should be noted. The study was conducted in a specific location and may not be applicable to other locations. Additionally, the study only tested four types of planting media and three watering intervals, and may not be representative of all possible combinations.
